Joe Steensma’s work exemplifies “transdisciplinary”. A successful scientist and entrepreneur who has founded and led several thriving businesses focused on public health, Steensma is now a Professor of Environmental Health and Social Entrepreneurship at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.
He conducts research that seeks to deepen our understanding of the relationship between human health and the natural environment. His current research takes him to Nigeria, Australia, Costa Rica and Haiti, where he is most interested in developing sustainable solutions to address food insecurity. His research looks at the interaction between economics, environmental degradation and health. In addition to his doctorate in education, Steensma earned an MPH from Saint Louis University.
He also loves the outdoors and is the author of two books about birds.
