Climate Change and Water Resources in the Caribbean: A Collective Study between MSU & Clarence Fitzroy Tryant College

Country
St. Kitts and Nevis
Year
2020

Principal Investigator: John Rodgers

This project, led by Dr. John Rodgers, aimed to investigate the impacts of climate change on water resources in St. Kitts through a collaborative partnership with Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC). The research focused on deploying field instruments to monitor rainfall and river water levels, with the goal of developing water budgets and informing regional climate adaptation strategies.

After significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Rodgers worked closely with CFBC faculty to reestablish collaboration, secure travel permissions, and plan the deployment of research equipment. By the end of 2022, Dr. Rodgers had acquired rain gauges and water-level data loggers and was preparing for a January 2023 research trip to St. Kitts.

The project’s most valuable outcome has been the reactivation of international collaboration and the groundwork laid for long-term climate monitoring in the Caribbean. The team plans to use citizen science and student involvement to collect data across the island, with the intention of expanding the research to other Caribbean nations and developing regional climate models. Despite early setbacks, the project has regained momentum and is poised to contribute meaningful data and insights to both local stakeholders and the broader scientific community.
