Currently being implemented, this project aims to pilot a culturally responsive framework for community-based mental health assessment in rural Nepal. Focusing on Dhading District, the initiative will compare health-official-administered and self-administered depression screening using the PHQ-9 tool, integrated into a local digital platform. The project will train local health volunteers and officials, collect qualitative and quantitative data, and develop open-source screening and training tools. By bridging agricultural and health systems, the work addresses the complex social and biological factors influencing mental health in rural communities. The pilot will generate data to inform future global health funding applications and scalable interventions, strengthening MSU’s international partnerships and advancing innovative, community-driven approaches to mental health in resource-limited settings.
