Global Development Seed Grants FAQs
Questions
What is the purpose of the Global Development Seed Grant Program (GDSG)?
The GDSG aims to initiate new or emerging global partnerships that enhance MSU’s competitiveness and ability to secure external funding for international research and development projects.
Who can apply?
This program is designed to support MSU faculty or faculty teams with innovative projects and ideas with a global perspective that promote high-impact, sustainable, and scholarly activities or capacity building. We want to support faculty with creative ideas who need partners both on campus and/or internationally.
How much funding can I receive?
The typical funding amount is $5,000, unless it is determined that fewer funds are needed to support the project. Funds are often combined with departmental support or other funding sources.
Do I have to apply for the full $5,000?
No. If you decide your project requires a smaller funding amount, you can apply for less funding.
How many grants are awarded each year?
Each year, 5 to 6 seed grants are awarded, depending on available funding and project application quality.
If awarded, how long do I have to complete my project?
The grant period is one year from the start date, which is typically January 1. A six-month extension may be requested, but approval is at the committee’s discretion.
Are the funds provided upfront or as reimbursements?
Funds are reimbursed to the faculty's department, up to the approved amount. All expenses must align with the initial request made during the application process.
What types of expenses are covered by the grant?
Eligible expenses include project-related travel, research equipment, training costs, etc. Passports are not covered because it is a personal document, but travel clinics may be eligible if processed through Concur.
How much financial support is required from my department?
The level of support is flexible and determined by the department. There must be some demonstrated financial commitment, but the amount is not strictly defined.
Who handles my project's travel arrangements and approvals?
You must submit a Concur request for travel approval through your department. Once approved, Altour (formerly Travel Leaders) will handle flight booking. We can support with this process if needed.
Can I use the grant to purchase equipment?
Yes, equipment can be purchased by the department and reimbursed through the International Institute. The department retains control of the equipment for future use.
